My wife, 3 kids, and I were scheduled for a Friday to Friday trip. Due to Crowdstrike, First leg was cancelled and rebooked to Sunday. I booked a trip out of a different airport on a different airline for Saturday, hoping to cancel the first leg and move the return leg on Delta, but that required talking to a customer service agent. After 12 hours on hold, I fell asleep and sometime between 4:14-4:45 AM, I was disconnected. We cancelled that Saturday itinerary. Unfortunately, Sunday's outgoing flight was cancelled too. We rebooked for a Tues - Sunday itinerary on another airline. We also adjusted the itinerary of our oldest son, who was flying out for a shorter time. Total additional cost was $1600
After all of that, and about 6 weeks later, we received our reimbursement for the extra costs of the travel mess.
In the end, they fully reimbursed the extra costs we incurred in rebooking the trip on American. Additionally, they gave my wife and me 35k miles and gave our youngest 3 $350 in evouchers and my oldest son $50.
It was a pain, but Delta recognized it, and we were well compensated for it. I would have still preferred the original schedule, but we had a fun time here in those days we weren't traveling.
Kudos to Delta for owning up to the mistake. Still my preferred airline.
