POLL: Learn a language I WANT to learn, but it's less useful? Or learn a language I don't want to learn, but will be 100x more useful...
Some of you might know I really enjoy studying languages. It's a way for me to keep diversifying my skillset, and it gives me something proactive to do outside of work. I learned Icelandic on my mission, learned German in school and with my brother, and I've dabbled here and there with other languages that I can speak to a small degree. I want to dive in deeper to a new language and reach a high level at it. I am really looking at 2 main options. Spanish and Japanese. Spanish would obviously be way more useful. It's almost as widely spoken in the US as English and all of latin america/a good portion of europe can also speak Spanish. I want to want to learn Spanish. I feel like it makes more sense to learn it. However, I don't have the desire to actually study it and commit to it. I feel like if I really made myself, I could do it. But what I'd rather learn, and what I would actually enjoy doing and want to do, is Japanese. I know it's way more difficult, a higher learning curve, and will probably take me 3x longer to be proficient in than Spanish. I will also only use it if I go to Hawaii (and that will be sparingly) or Japan. So my question is, do I force myself to learn the easier and more useful Spanish, or do I do what I WANT to do and learn Japanese?
