If your CPA says the goal is to not get audited, you need to fire your CPA

The goal should be to legally pay the least amount of taxes possible. If that means the IRS wants to look at your supporting documentation for a tax break that you are legally entitled to, so be it. Show them the documents and tell them to pound sand.

Don't be afraid of the IRS. Follow the law and make their life as difficult as possible.
