BYU did it right with Cosmo
All of our blue goggled selves including me want to believe there is one amazing athletic person performing Cosmo’s stunts. That team of Cosmos has done some amazing marketing for BYU athletics. Normal mascots are just additions to the cheer squad. Costume limitations prevent them from even doing a backflip. But BYU turned a mascot into something people talk about separately from BYU sports. Cosmo is built for stunts.

Look at what the Cosmo team did for Big Noon Kickoff. You don’t get that crew just highlighting the mascot at any other university. In order to perform that skydiving entrance stunt, Cosmo had to have at least a Class C Skydiving license but most likely Class D for safety due to the crowd. Class D requires 500 jumps and 100 of them landing at least 7 feet from center. I doubt that’s a student, but bravo for be willing to pay an expert to do this. Then have the logistics ready to switch skydive Cosmo to dancing Cosmo to table pushup Cosmo to flip through ring of fire Cosmo etc all within a weeks notice of Fox going to Provo. In addition buy multiple variations of the mascot. Ripped Cosmo doing fire twirling would be constraining for the athlete to do backflips.

I saw KSU fans pull out their phones before the Cosmo Stunt several weeks ago. Visiting fans don’t record opposing mascots entertaining the crowd. It’s brilliant marketing by BYU to build a team that adds to the brand.
