"Cockfighting is technically banned in every state except Louisiana and New Mexico. But John Haddow, a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., who has worked with cockfighting advocates in several states, said he thinks it goes on in every part of the country. He said a "significant number" of Idaho farmers raise fighting birds for sale in Idaho and elsewhere -- and should be allowed to keep doing so.

"What you're doing is criminalizing hardworking farm families who just don't view roosters the same way somebody does who has a pet dog or pet cat," said Haddow, who has been to a few cockfights in the course of his work. "These are not bad people; they're everyday farmers."
