I was just too competitive and there was absolutely nothing I could do better than this guy. He already had been a lieutenant in the Army, had a masters in civil engineering, could play the piano without the written music for about any song, sing like a he was a professional. I can't remember all the languages he spoke. Most of these hyper intelligent individuals are social pariahs. Not this guy. Everybody loved and worshiped this guy. It was humiliating.
About the only thing I probably could have done better than him was I could probably roll him into a ditch (he was smaller than me).
It's so hard to understand when you're with someone like that how lacking you are in many skills.
He went on and got a PHD in Astrophysics and wrote books that I could barely understand the titles. He was Chilean, but married one of the sister missionaries from our mission from Toole and went to work for NASA.
We got to be decent friends later in our mission when I accepted my limitations and recognized what a great opportunity it had been to serve with him. We had such great missionary success. He'd think of so many unique ways of meeting people and had such charisma that the people couldn't wait to join the church. I believe he was on of the 3 Nephites 😉
