I was riding my bike down the road in front of my house. And I looked down and noticed the handle brake was loose, like jiggling against the handle bar. And then like a slow motion scene from a movie I see it fall off, and what seemed like a minute it falls into the air only to be tethered to the bike by the brake cord, and then slowly falls right into the moving spokes of my bike. I can still replay in my mind the whole scenario.
And then fast forward to real time. Instantly the bike flips into air, I flip straight into asphalt. I’m lucky I’m not dead or brain dead today. No helmet, no special pads.
I got up, turned around and saw my mangled bike and started crying that my bike was ruined. And then the pain hit. My shoulder hurt really bad. I went in crying to tell my dad what happened. He took me down to urgent care and xray revealed a hairline fracture of my shoulder bone.
I wore a sling for 6 weeks and in the meantime learned how to dribble a basketball and shoot a layup with my left hand. I probably became a better basketball player than I would have been had it not happened.
But looking back it really was a miracle I somehow didn’t land on my head and have any kind of head injury.
