Under the Sea - Composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman for The Little Mermaid (1989). Performed by Samuel E. Wright. It is influenced by the calypso style of the Caribbean which originated in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as reggae, which originated in Jamaica. The track won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1989, the first for a Disney film since "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins in 1964. Additionally, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media in 1991. Menken also won an Oscar for best score.
You're Welcome - Written and composed by Lin Manuel Miranda for Moana (2016). Performed by Dwayne Johnson. Miranda and vocal coach Sam Kriger were on hand to assist Johnson during recording for the song. In the original (and Jordan Fisher and Lin-Manuel Miranda's) version of the song, Maui says that he killed a snake and it sprouted a coconut tree. But in the final version of the song, he says that he killed an eel and it sprouted a coconut tree. This is more accurate, as in Polynesian mythology, it is said that Maui created the first coconut tree by beheading an eel.
