It wasn't that many years ago that BYU fans would mention high-end recruits with hopes that they might consider BYU, but it was always a pipe dream. The best recruits always ended up going to the Dukes, North Carolinas, Kentuckys or other legitimate blue blood programs. Once a generation BYU might get a top recruit like Ainge or Jimmer, but they were both unique situations since they had strong religious ties to BYU. And truth be told, out of HS Jimmer wasn't considered an elite prospect.
Even top LDS players have traditionally chosen big-name programs instead of BYU.
But now everything is turned on its head. BYU not only can get the top recruits to listen to BYU's pitch, but many are beating on BYU's door wanting to seriously consider becoming a Cougar. BYU has the #1. recruit coming next season, and he has no previous ties to BYU.
Now, BYU can be much more selective in who they pursue. Fit is crucial. But a high percentage of the top recruits are listening to BYU and listing the Cougars as one of their top potential landing spots.
What's really amazing is how quickly this has all changed. It's basically been within the past year.
