When was at BYU he and his staff were reaching out to nearly every player in the portal. They had to in hopes that they might be able to snag a player or two.
Now, some fans are concerned because they don't hear BYU's name associated with a large percentage of the players in the portal.
Some thoughts about this:
1. BYU now has the cash as well as the reputation of being a training ground for players with hopes of playing in the NBA.
2. Seeing what BYU has done since KY and his staff arrived in Provo, players and their families are reaching out to BYU with interest.
3. It's likely much of BYU's activity relative to the portal is outside under the radar and the media is unaware of much of what they're doing.
4. BYU can be much more selective than they were even a year ago. There are a lot of good players in the portal, but BYU is looking for very specific players to fill very specific needs. They also need to be a good fit culturally and academically.
5. An example of the "new BYU approach" is the announcing of the signing of the big out of Washington. There was no media hype listing the player's top 4 or 5 schools. There were no rumors about the possibility of him signing with BYU before it occurred. It was a pleasant surprise to most of us. We had to look into the player to get a fill for the role he might play at BYU after the signing. But BYU knew what they were doing and quietly signed a player they were interested in who they believe is a good fit and will help them next year. This probably more likely how we'll see a lot of things happening going forward instead of a public beauty contest between a number of schools vying for a player's attention.
