Analysis of VCU’s defense from a middle school/jr high basketball coach
So take that for what it’s worth and my kids have only had a bit better than .500 record so I’m really selling myself here:

In the two games - loss to UNM and win over GMU in the championship game on Sunday- VCU plays good on ball defense with almost no help in pick n roll situations particularly at the top of the key, relying on their decent bigs to stop any at the rim attempts.

If Richie, Egor or any one else penetrates too far there probably gonna get blocked more often than not with them flying the other way hunting wing/corner threes.

Fouss may not have his most productive game other than assisting on perimeter shots as they’re good to great interior one on one defense and double intermittently.

They seem susceptible to penetration/kick shots from range. GMU had a bunch of those and missed more than we would on a regular day (who knows what that will look like with the pressure of the tournament) but it should be there if we can hit.

The only really elite thing. Defensively is the interior defense.

Partly because of scheme and partly because they’re not in the same universe defensively as Houston, there will be open shots.

Bonus (offense) as others have said they play five out with bigs leaking inside from time to time. Not a terrible rebounding team largely due to having size on many opponents but nothing like Houston for who attack the glass like it’s their religion.

Their hands aren’t that strong and they turn it over a lot on rebounds or have interior passes stolen. Bigs are only good at blocks inside.

They are legitimate threats from 3, with 3 or four high level perimeter shooters and 22 can drive but does turn it over at times on those drives.

They look to kick to open shooters as much as we do as much as any team I’ve seen other than us and if we can do a good job of defending that we should have a really good chance to win because I’m guessing we’re the most complete shooing team they’ve face.

Trust me when I say the KY and co know all of this and then some. I think we’ll be just fine!
