Don’t miss a chance
This will be the first NCAA tournament w/out my dad. He passed away in December. Like many of you on here, BYU sports was the thing we did together. He didn’t golf. He didn’t tinker with cars. In fact, getting jumper cables applied correctly was a stretch for him. His hobby was work and BYU sports. I can’t count how many times in the last few years he called me to come over to “fix” BYUTV & ESPN+ because he couldn’t find BYU Volleyball or soccer games that were on. If you tried to stop by or call at 10am he would ignore you because Sportsnation was on and he considered Jarom and Spencer sons.

When I was 14 in 1992 he loaded me up in the car and we drove to Boise, ID for the West regional games. I remember he had $500 in his wallet for the trip and planned to scalp some tickets for the game. Well the ticket scalper took full advantage of an eager kid and an inexperienced purchaser. $400 later we had tickets to the session about 3 rows from the top. I remember pretending like I wasn’t hungry or thirsty in the arena knowing we had spent most of our $$. He insisted on spoiling me and the coke and popcorn flowed freely.

The only thing I remember about the game was Shaq looked like a giant on the court and made quick work of Gary Trost and the Cougars. Although the game was a blowout, I will never forget ditching school and spending that day with my dad and will always honor and appreciate the sacrifice he made to support the Cougs that day and invest in me.

Why do I tell you this? I’ve read multiple posts about deciding to get to Denver to watch the game and support the team.

JUST GO!! Take your kids. Make the drive. Spend the $$ you shouldn’t. Make memories. I would give anything to have my dad in the car when we leave Wednesday morning for the 12 hour one way drive to Denver. I’ll have my 15 year old riding shotgun and we will eat gas station burritos and corn dogs. Drink copious amounts of Diet Coke and Mtn Dew. We will create mtns of sunflower seed piles in the car. We will talk
About life, school, girls, missions, fears, goals, testimonies. We will cheer until our voices are gone. Don’t wait! You’ll wish you would’ve gone.

On my dad’s headstone, my mom didn’t put any religious text or pictures of the temple. The only thing she added was this saying:

“It’s always more fun to win”

GO COUGS!!
