When I was in school, I was cheering my guts out for guys like Jimmy Balderson, Brock Reichner, Mike Rose, Keena Young, and Trent Plaisted. Let me be clear: I love those guys. And we had some really good teams in the early Dave Rose era. But I can count on one hand how many highlight-worthy dunks we had in that era. It's one: Trent Plaisted had an awesome dunk against Colorado State, but even then I have to trust Greg Wrubell, because I couldn't even see it on TV. To my knowledge, video of the dunk doesn't even exist. But in my mind's eye, it was glorious.
I was thinking about this last night when Keba Keita threw down what was one of the most ferocious dunks I've ever seen in person. This isn't the first time Keba has given us a thunderous dunk, and it won't be the last. Keba, Fouss, Demin, Catchings, even Boskovic--they've all given us huge dunks this year, and even Atiki Ally Atiki got in on the fun last year when he got some nice lobs from Dallin Hall.
Dunks are fun, and this geriatric Millennial just wants to remind the younger crowd that they used to be few and far between. We used to go crazy when Chris Miles had a wide-open, two-handed dunk jumping off two flat feet. We used to just lose our minds when Jackson Emery had a breakaway dunk after a steal. He'd summon all his eagle powers and jump with all his might to give us a two-handed slam, and we loved him for it.
BYU has come a long way since I was in school 20 years ago.
