It's a remnant of rugby. What we saw last night is a regular occurrence in rugby. Penalty awarded, team has option to
kick for goal (penalty goal, 3 points in rugby).
Football doesn't look much like rugby, but the 2 sports overlapped a lot 120 years ago.
