Me too. Best explanation I heard was that Indiana residents commonly said
"Who's here?" or "Who is ye?" to the families that were migrating through Indiana to the western United States.

Of course, there was plenty of French influence in Indiana, and I also heard that it was derived from the French word for red (rouge) and used to describe the red faces of Indiana farmers.
