Points per drive is a bit crude, but decent in a pinch. Yards per plays is similar.
Basically, total offense (and defense) doesn’t take into account: number of drives, length of field, opponent strength, etc. So total offense would say that a Sun Belt team that runs a high tempo offense is necessarily better than an SEC team that slows the game down. That might be true! But the number of yards doesn’t really tell us whether it is.
