I’d personally love to hear a coach like Jay Hill break down exactly why he
chooses to play safe or conservative in any given situation. Hand wringing from anxious fans watching from home (myself included) really tells me nothing as to the reality of what’s going on or why a strategy might or might not be a good idea.

All these coaches involved have been in these situations so many times, are they really just stubbornly clinging to bad ways of doing things for no reason?

Jay Hill is nearly universally praised here as a good coach, so why does even he go conservative and suddenly do things that fans continually moan about regardless of who’s coaching?

I feel like there’s a pretty big disconnect between what it’s actually to coach a football team and what fans think it’s like. Like fans have these whole strategies that they’re “not a fan of,” but serious coaches with successful track records like Hill go ahead and do it. It’s odd that the literal professional experts on the subject do things the fans claim to have enough knowledge about how it doesn’t work.

Like one side has to be wrong. Either the fans don’t really know what’s happening, or the professionals who have the skill and expertise willfully choose to things in bad and wrong ways.

Football is weird and I wish coaches actually shared what it was like instead of just vague general coach speak.
