my parents did basically the same thing, except they live on main floor and basement is untouched except for visitors
basement has 3 bedrooms and two living rooms so that's where the kids/grandkids stay when visiting.
seems like a good set up and I'll consider buying a house along the same lines when I'm getting to the point of not wanting stairs any more.
