They are not used to it. I don't see it as being fake, just friendly with strangers. When I lived on the East Coast, people wouldn't even look at you. I didn't like it. I would rather be "fake" nice then be dismissively aloof.

I have taught my 4 daughters to Always smile and say hi. I believe that type of kind gesture goes a long way. Kindness is a beautiful attribute.
