That's true, and a lot of N-word place names have been removed already.
As well as things like "Chinaman's Hat" and the like. I'm sure all these changes make some people angry, but part of living in harmony with other people and cultures is to make simple changes to avoid giving unnecessary, pointless offense.

When does changing historical names equal erasing or recreating history? Would an uncomfortable name remain a constant

Names have always been changed. Always. I don't think it is a huge concern for legitimately offensive names.
