Growing up,
Squaw Peak was one of my favorite hikes and was one of Provo's most prominent landmarks. It was renamed Kyhv Peak in 2022 as part of a federal order to remove the derogatory term "squaw" from federally owned places in the United States. I had never considered it a derogatory term as Squaw Peak was certainly an awe inspiring mountain. What in the world is Kyhv? I guess it is the Ute word for mountain. I will always know it as Squaw Peak.
It got me thinking about
Squaw Valley Ski Resort, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics near Tahoe City. Sure enough - it changed its name to Palisades Tahoe in 2021 without me even noticing.
Squaw Valley, California was a town east of Fresno, population 4,568. It's changed its name to Yokuts Valley. I missed that one too. Renamed in January 2023.
I don't know if they missed renaming the Squaw Canyon and
Squaw Canyon Trail in Canyonlands, but I'd be ok if they did. It's a beautiful place down in southern Utah.
