Combination of factors: 1. Paying players became legal
BYU would never sanction the prior requirement to be a top program — paying players under the table.
2. Snagging KY, a guy with unique NBA ties and experience.
3. The ability to sell BYU and its lack of "distractions" as a stepping stone to the league.
These are all related and converged simultaneously to give us something never possible before.
