get given they're only 12-11 in the month of September so far. They haven't exactly been playing their best baseball as of late. The Dodgers claiming the division tonight will help in that regard, however:
The Padres would still need to win a game vs the D'backs in that scenario in order to hold onto the #4 spot and therefore home field for the WC round.
But if the D'backs go 2-1 I like their odds to claim a WC spot. Not guaranteed as of right now, but it's hard to imagine the Braves and Mets finishing in the way that would be required to keep Arizona out should they go 2-1.
The Mets lucked out. The Brewers already have nothing left to play for. They can't improve nor weaken their initial playoff spot at this point. Slim possibility a sweep to the Mets could bite them should they make the NLCS and they failed to achieve a better record than the 4th or 5th seed who happened to also make the NLCS.
The Braves did not luck out in multiple ways. First, they face the Royals who are also still fighting for a WC spot. Second, they had momentum and Chris Sale set to take the mound last night, and now they have neither. Third, they now sit in the most precarious position for claiming that final WC spot in the NL and must play nearly flawless baseball up to and including probably 2 games on Monday if they want to make the playoffs. Which would then have them completely wrecked to immediately travel to either Milwaukee or San Diego for the WC round.
IOW, I think the Mets and D'backs now make it thanks to a weather assist to the Mets.
