Nope, he called for the bunt on the first pitch then called it off. Read the
article. He said the Padres were playing to get the lead runner on a bunt, so he decided to let him hit. Who cares, you still have 2 on and one out and Ohtani coming up. Roberts called it off and in turn cost the top of his lineup the chance to tie or even go ahead and win the game.

And guess what, there is no guarantee if your player bunts it where he should you get the out at 3rd. This is my point; all teams want to get the lead runner but end up taking the guaranteed out at first. You see it 99% of the time when a batter bunts, they take the out at 1st base.
