To build a 50 meter in the Richards Building, byu would have needed to alter the footprint of the building, which would’ve then required the entire structure be updated for code purposes.
To use their current space they were quoted something around 7-8 million.
Once the construction crews started working, it was discovered that structural upgrades had to happen no matter what. So the ultimate cost was the same had they just expanded the building into the parking lot to fit a 50 meter pool in.
While the pool is 43 meters, it has a bulk head to move between 25 yards (for college competition) and 25 meters (foreign teams often train this for Olympic competition)
Byu has a really good set up, even with it only being 43 meters. They just don’t have the best coaching, same with utah
