It’s just starting to sink in today that Coach Young is the perfect coach to have at this time in college athletics.
When he was hired I thought he was qualified enough as a coach of basketball but would be highly disadvantaged in recruiting and in matters as it relates to NIL (remember, Pope saying that he spent most of his time on NIL matters)
How completely wrong that line of thinking was. He somehow comes into this moment with exactly the right approach and an uncanny understanding of things his résumé would lead you to believe he would not have.
The fact that he can go up against a guy like Calipari for the top recruit from Europe, coming to the US and soundly out recruit him is incredible. His genuineness, his likability, and his reputation in the WORLD of basketball is off the charts and something that I think the average BYU fan had no idea we were getting when we got it.
On this board we joke about wishing a guy like Andy Reid would come and coach BYU football. Well somehow we got that kind of a coach at BYU For basketball (at least in recruiting, vision, and character.
It remains to be seen how well he’s going to coach, but that’s the thing going into this that most people would think he would be most adept at.
It’s absolutely mind blowing that in one week we bring in a lottery pick from Europe, announce an upcoming visit for the number one recruit in the nation next year, and that we also had a five star potential Lottery pick locked up and ready to come, but then get turned away by the admissions department. It’s important to note that these guys aren’t just chasing the top and NIL dollar, They are looking for the place that can prepare them for where they want to go, which is the NBA
That kind of recruiting success is something that we have never seen at BYU and something we never thought we would see.
What a great time to be a BYU basketball fan
