Honestly, they are the wrong dog for most people for the reasons you mention.
I'm a sucker for herding breeds, especially border collies. I've had 2. We bought the second one help wear out the first one because we couldn't do it. My wife loves training dogs. Those dogs were the best. They knew so many tricks and words and were impeccably well mannered. People would meet them and tell us they were going to get a border collie because of them and we had to talk them out of it. They had no idea how much time and work went into the training. We got them before we had kids. We joined a flyball team with them (its a weird dog sport). They had literally hundreds of hours of formal training in obedience and flyball and agility along with countless hours of training at home. They don't need that much to be good dogs but they do need a lot of physical and mental stimulation or they can go nuts and drive you there too.

We rescued an old lady BC mix a few months ago. She is so fat that she couldn't get into any trouble if she wanted to. She's still so smart though. I doubt it will be too long before my wife gets another BC pup. I've moved to a Vizsla. Just as much energy, half the brains.
