and while comparing him to Mike Leach is certainly not anything close to apples to apples (rank and file college professor versus highly visible head football coach), like Leach, my dad is somewhat of an eccentric non-conformist who likes to play by his rules and isn't particularly deferential to authority figures.
At Texas Tech (where he got tenure), my dad was on a much longer leash than he could've ever dreamed of being on at BYU (where he was denied tenure).
Along those lines, while Lubbock is arguably every bit as politically conservative as Provo, the culture surrounding Texas Tech is dramatically more laid back and hands off than BYU's culture.
So if Mike Leach resented feeling like he was being put under a microscope at Texas Tech . . .
