What is your policy on lending family members money? I’ve loaned family members
money before but have always had the policy that I’ll only loan an amount I’m ok with not getting back just in case they never pay me back.

We just found out my in-Laws are about to be evicted and I’m pretty sure my MIL is going to ask my wife to borrow money. We are both hesitant to loan them money because my FIL lost his job and doesn’t have a new job lined up and isn’t overly motivated to find a new one. They owe November and December and with January right around the corner they’d probably need that to but who knows if he’d even have a job in time to pay feb so it could all be just to buy them time and still be evicted. This isn’t anything new they’ve always struggle for some reason. We’ve tried to convince my father in law to at least find something temporarily so he’s at least bringing in some kind of income. He’s an insurance broker and doesn’t want to change professions but my wife says he’s struggled financially as long as she can remember.

I’m curious how others handle this. Last time they asked us to co sign on a car and we told them no they were upset with us.
