1. Voxtrot: Raised by Wolves
One album and three EPs wasn't enough. Or was it the perfect amount? Voxtrot is my favorite band, even giving childhood favorites The Smiths and Depeche Mode a run for it.
2. Tilly and the Wall: Rainbows in the Dark
They had a moment in the sun, with a Letterman appearance and 32 million hits on their Sesame Street song. But tap dancing swagger saves their spot on this list.
3. Bishop Allen: Rain
12 EPs in 12 months, followed a year later by an album with such lovely songs as this. Show offs.
4. Math and Physics Club: Sixteen and Pretty
The most precious song from the band with the most precious name. Instant melancholy.
5. Belle and Sebastian: Your Cover's Blown
Hardly obscure, but this B-side is the song that brought me to Belle and Sebastian. I don't go to shows much now that I'm an old man, but their coming to Sundance this summer might get me off my couch.
