Looking at these vintage pictures, I am tempted to scream, "That's a rug."



I can almost see the tackboard holding the carpeting down in the picture above.



As for this picture, well, Kennedy's dome cover looks like it would make a nice nest for several robbins if turned upside down and returned to the tree.
