FWIW, he didn't brag. The only story he told us in class was that he had two ships shot out from under him during WWII and being in a life raft all that time had led to his skin cancer and required him to miss a day for treatments from time to time. In reference to that, he told the story about seeing the Yamato's mast above the horizon, the 18 inch shells ripping holes through the ship without detonating, and fighting sharks off.
He did not get into any gore or heroic action. I picked those details out of articles I found online today that refer to him by name. I agree with others that WWII vets I've talked with do not like to talk about there experiences and never brag. And why would you brag? The only reason their friends are dead and they aren't is luck.
