Function, yes. Form, well...
From a functional point of view, these new Riddell helmets (they started popping up last year) are probably the best option for skill players who need to have a better view of the field. They're designed in a way that gives the player a bit more peripheral vision since the sides of the helmet and facemask bars are pulled back.

Aesthetically, I feel like they're starting to depart a bit too much from the traditional football look. They look more like BMX helmets or something. But then again, what would players from the early 1900s have to say about any of our modern helmets?

I don't love these helmets, but if it helps him see the field a little bit better and not throw the pass into coverage, avoiding the interception, or if it helps him see the defender coming to the right, avoiding the big hit and inevitable fumble...

... then maybe it's a great look for Max.
