Yes, go with the guide. Depending on the MTB tire, I'm at 21-24psi, and that's
firmer than what the guide says for me (works for me though--last thing I want in a race is a pinch flat).
For what it's worth, most MTB rims aren't rated above 50psi. If you follow the guide, you'll have a more comfortable ride, better traction, etc.
