Having the equipment (rhino ramps, jack, or lift) and tools (basin to drain, filter wrench, etc) means you can do it in less time than it would take to wait for a place to do it. When I decide to do it it takes me 20-30 minutes from start to finish and that is cause I am in no hurry... often perform it while listening to a podcast on a Saturday morning
You also save money even while using superior filters and synthetic oils.
Also you know the job was actually done right - sometimes they change oil but not filter. Or they overtighten something out of not caring.
You can also measure how much you take out vs what you put in last time to see if the engine is burning excess oil... having a spreadsheet and tracking the details is great for buyers of my cars. I price my cars high when I sell and wait for the right buyer that appreciates a detailed history of maintenance.
You also see other things while under your car possibly catching issues before they get become a problem
If you have the right set of conditions it is better in pretty much every way.
