Why did she think she can’t say “Merry Christmas”? I’ve never stopped saying it,
or hearing it.

However, I have spent a lot of time around non-Christian people during my life, and I do try to be sensitive to what they do or don’t celebrate. I usually don’t say Merry Christmas to Buddhist or non-religious Japanese or Chinese (who mostly have no idea who Jesus is, or that Christmas celebrates His birth), for example, or to devout Jews or Muslims. Otherwise, I just wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Incidentally, I also try to wish people a happy holiday that they celebrate, even when I don’t. For example, Chinese New Year, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, or Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, or whatever.
