I think there’s better out there for sure but how many better OC’s is …
…difficult to say. Hot young OC’s don’t grow on trees and often don’t stay very long in one place as an OC. Most aspire to becoming HC’s. Despite how CB wants to blame and fire him every time Jake Retzlaff misses a wide open receiver or throws a pick, We’ve had some consistent success with him that has, to a degree, not been seen at BYU in a while:

Aaron Roderick has been instrumental in developing several BYU players who have had success in college in his offenses and have advanced to the NFL during his tenure. Here’s an overview of several of these players, their college statistics under Roderick’s mentorship, and their current NFL statuses:

Quarterbacks:

1. Zach Wilson
• NFL Draft Status: Selected 2nd overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft.
• College Stats under Roderick:
• 2020 Season: 3,692 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 196.4 passer efficiency rating.
• Accolades: Finished 8th in Heisman Trophy voting; finalist for the Manning Award; semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award, and Davey O’Brien Award.

2. Jaren Hall
• NFL Draft Status: Selected in the 5th round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
• College Stats under Roderick:
• 2021 Season: 2,583 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 5 interceptions.
• 2022 Season: 3,171 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, 6 interceptions.

Running Backs:

Tyler Allgeier
• NFL Draft Status: Selected in the 5th round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
• College Stats under Roderick:
• 2020 Season: 1,130 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns.
• 2021 Season: 1,606 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns.
• Accolades: Semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award.

Chris Brooks
• NFL Status: Signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2023.
• College Stats under Roderick:
• 2022 Season: 817 rushing yards, 6 touchdowns.

Dax Milne

• 2022 Season: 625 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns (in an injury-shortened season).

Offensive Linemen:

Brady Christensen
• NFL Draft Status: Selected in the 3rd round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
• College Career under Roderick: Started all games at left tackle during the 2020 season, contributing to an offensive line that allowed only 12 sacks and helped the offense average 522.2 yards per game.

Blake Freeland
• NFL Draft Status: Selected in the 4th round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
• College Career under Roderick: Played a pivotal role on the offensive line, starting all games in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, contributing to a high-powered offense that averaged over 30 points per game.
