I don’t ever recall anyone saying that the NBA would surpass the NFL in
popularity, at least not in the US. Soccer either. Although admittedly, both are far more popular globally. Maybe that’s what you recall?

Not sure about MLB — it seems far less popular now than it was when I was a kid, or in my 20s. I rarely watch it anymore, and don’t have many friends who do, TBH. My three boys (in their 20s) are huge sports fans, and they love the NFL and NBA and soccer and college football and college basketball, and they like the NHL too, but none of them are very interested in MLB. Maybe my sample is biased.

I do agree that the NBA has declined. I’m definitely far less interested in it than I was in the ‘80s or ‘90s or ‘00s.
