RE: Why do they call it Nippon instead, of you know, Japan?
日本 => 日 (nichi) and 本 (hon). When combined it can be pronounced two ways: Nihon or Nippon.
The official name of the country is 日本
but when we romanize the way to pronounce it, it's either Nihon or Nippon.
