With Wakley and Wall on the field, our passing defense success rate is 20-25% points higher than when any other combination of safeties are on the field. The combination of Wakley/Wall disguises coverages better than any other combination of safeties. Wall/Wakely understand Jay's defense in a way that allows them to QB the defensive backfield, call and change the coverages, etc. That doesn't happen when we get into the depth of our safety room. Despite what CB loves to spew, Wakley/Wall are by far the best tackling safeties that we have on the roster. For those constantly clammering for the "freshmen to get more playing time"...
Wall had more tackles in our last game than Satuala has all season. Prassas has missed more tackles this season than he's made (per PFF). Our fans don't realize how good we've had it this season at safety. We have the #3 passing defense in the nation and we did it with two walk on safeties who have outplayed two 4 star safeties (Damuni and Satuala) and a 3 star safety whos best offer was Dayton or the equivalent. Wall and Wakley also relegated a freshman all-american to the bench and then to the portal (2024). In 2025, in their first seasons playing safety for BYU - basically freshmen safeties since Wakley had been a QB and Wall had been a WR prior to 2023) Wall/Wakley relegated a 4-year starter (6 years in the program) to the bench and then to early retirement.
There is a reason why Wakley (10) and Wall (12) started 22 games between them this season. Jay Hill starts his best and plays his best. When he gets cute with his safety rotations, we tend to give up big plays.
