Bonuses are "taxed" at the same rate as normal income but taxes "withheld" are
higher on that type of income. When I received bonuses at my previous firm I would often switch my withholdings to exempt for that off cycle payment and then put it back to normal. This was large company and I could change my withholdings on my own thru my HR portal so wasn't a big deal. If there isn't a change to the withholding calculation it won't matter when you run the payroll it will still be "withheld" at the higher rate.
