guy who could coach BYU and act like his success was greater than it was. Yes, he was successful to a degree, but not against our primary rival.
He's a good coach and his type of player loves playing for him, but at the same time, he drove away a lot of guys through his "holier-than-thou" messaging about playing for BYU. While he was here, Utah gained a distinct recruiting advantage with a lot of players who probably would have had BYU as their 1st choice (e.g. Covey and many others).
The bottom line for me was that he didn't believe BYU could consistently win as an independent, so he left. When he had several years to build HIS team at Virginia, he came here with all his P5 advantages and got beat handily by a coach who DID believe BYU could win as an independent and with players who probably would not have come to BYU had Bronco still been here.
I tip my hat to him for what he did while he was here, but I'm glad he left when he did. I'm not a fan of UVA, UNM, or USU, so his success or failure does not matter to me.
When a coach leaves I'm not going to cheer for him simply because he was once at BYU. So if Bronco or Pope or whoever succeeds/fails. Great, I don't care.
I do care about up-and-coming younger potential BYU coaches. To the extent that they could benefit BYU in the future, I'm all about their success. But for guys who have been here and left....adios. Right now they are just competition for LDS recruits.
