The main thing with Google's own phones is that it is an android operating system without any other OEM adding their own layer over the top. So nothing from Samsung, or LG, or whatever. Plus, you can delete any apps you don't want. Things aren't forced on you like apps from the carrier like Verizon.

I don't know how it is now, but at one point, Samsung tried to force you to use Bixby and had news reading apps and widgets that you couldn't get rid of.
