…to begin with up until mid-‘22 and my frustration w/ him really accelerated when I saw the turnaround Hill was able to do in such a short period of time as he came on board in 2023 and the drastic defensive improvements in literally every aspect that continued through this season, which really is the primary reason BYU is 10-2, all while the offense has stagnated.

My biggest gripe w/ Arod is that CBers love the tired excuse of “well Arod does the best he can w/ the talent he has” which is actually dually incriminating by 1. Indirectly acknowledging it could be better “..he does his best” and at the same time 2. not understanding it’s literally his primary job as OC to get the best talent possible there to fit his system. This is his biggest failure imo and the gap is getting wider now that BYU is in a P4.

It is well documented he is a lackluster recruiter, and his track record is very poor at regularly missing on high profile LDS kids, the ones we literally have to win on the majority of the time to make the program a contender on a national level.

Also, he seems to not be able to motivate the offense in big games. Never has this been more on full display than this season with some of the highest stakes games BYU has ever played in program history vs oSu, Utah, Kansas, ASU and even last night vs Houston, just how flat and little to no energy the O came out with and had during the first halves of each of these games with disastrous or near disastrous consequences on each.

Another thing is Arod’s offense is so boring now to watch, and predictable with its overly slow tempo and how he tries to force things rather than continually adapt in real time to what’s working. Historically BYU has been the innovator in offensive scheme, however, it’s now a similar boring version of what Utah tries to do without many explosive, exciting plays. A far cry from the days of the school and program that essentially created the west coast offense and QBU.

He seems complacent in his role and I feel the trajectory has been declining since 2021. We’ve never had a lower rated group of QBs in waiting (and it shows) and it’s a sad state vs BYUs proud tradition at that position and expectation of high powered offenses.

He was a decent enough OC during the unique time of BYUs independence era, but just as Jay Hill leveled up BYUs defense and even more so, recruiting, in a short 2 seasons, it’s time to find a comparable Jay Hill-type, innovative OC to make a similar jump on the offensive side of the ball (and especially recruiting) and take BYU to the next level and build its reputation and brand as an explosive and fun to play in/and watch offense (as it used to be known for) …before the next big round of realignment in the next 5-6 years when all the new TV contracts expire. This is what drives the urgency in my mind. We can’t just pat ourselves on the back for a “good enough” season anymore as we only have a small window to garner respect from the media and committees to ensure we’re secured in top-tier football for years to come instead of being left on the outside looking in again.
