For me it depends heavily on the context of the comments

If a reporter is sitting there and talked to Sam and dad (Jared) and says

R: So, Sam, you didn't get an offer from BYU when you first came out of High School. Did that bother you?

S: Every team that didn't offer me bothered me growing up

R: What about you Jared? You obviously played for BYU back in the day. I know you're rooting for Arizona St, but is there still some part of you that wants to see BYU play well, to do some things right even it's ultimately in defeat?

J: I don't have any feelings towards wanting BYU to do anything right. I hope it's a complete disaster form them, that we throttle those guys

Then how could I find that offensive.  Maybe if they were trying to interview the son and Dad came and inserted himself into the conversation to let everyone know how much he hated BYU.

We keep talking about how important it is to manufacture disrespect and have a chip on our shoulder...and then when they do the same, it's being over the top and clearly going to be a detriment.

But any time anyone says anything other than BYU is amazing, we seem to want to use it as locker room bulletin board material
