My point is that the Orthodox Rabbi is just one voice in a much bigger debate.
He is not the gatekeeper of all Jewishness, that is all.
Personally, I just use Israeli naturalization laws as a proxy for world consensus. You can be totally secular and get in by blood. You can convert. Israelis squabble about this stuff all the time. Conclusion: it is an active debate, but blood and faith seem to be involved.

Are they all practicing? (As much as I like our Jewish QB, WE are not "kinda" ethnic. As much as some of us think so.)
