I sometimes wonder How car manufacturers decide what side of the car to put the
gas fill up on. Is it just a random process or is there logic to it?

The Mazda is a 2012 - so maybe they switched everything over recently?

Nearly 80% of all cars sold in the US have left side fill-up.
