Half the player is over stating it, but he doesn't have nearly the impact on the ice that Gretzky did. When he's out there defense needs to account for him and his off the charts skill set. With Gretz they had to worry about all 5 players on the ice because he was going to disrupt everything the defense did and get everyone involved.

I don't care if he gets the record because his goal scoring skill is beyond amazing, but as a hockey player he's nowhere near Gretzky in my mind.
