had a murder client who, prior to retaining counsel, contact the police and tell them, "You probably are going to want to talk to me about this murder because....." on the day after the murder.
In my experience, police tend to focus on the first likely suspect and struggle to follow the evidence. The goal for any criminal suspect should be to avoid drawing attention of the police after some crime.
