No matter how ugly the game is, you happily take a win in the BYU-Utah game and walk away thrilled. But the truth is that in 2 of its last 3 games BYU has needed last second drives to beat the two teams at the very bottom of the Big 12 standings. For all the criticism we as fans threw at Miami for surviving game after game against lesser competition, with Colorado nipping at its heels, nationally BYU is now being viewed as sitting in that same seat Miami was in, albeit with less glaring weaknesses and a stronger overall resume. And right now Kansas appears to be playing like the team we all expected them to be in the preseason. Their last three games have been a beat down of a revived Houston team, a last minute loss on a 50+ yard FG at K-State, and an absolute drubbing of Iowa State. So this Kansas team is looking really good right now and is fully capable of marching into Provo and pulling out a win.
I don't care. This is the point in the season where BYU needs to show it is the Alpha in the Big 12. You've got KU at night in LES. Go act like the Top 5 team you think you are and we all hope you are. This isn't even about quieting critics and showing you deserve a certain ranking. Much like the old WAC & MWC days this is about establishing a mentality that you are simply better than these teams on your schedule. So go out and execute like a real Top 5 executes against teams that aren't on their tier. Bow up, be disciplined, and stuff that vaunted KU rushing attack, make them one dimensional. Offensively dominate up front and run it right down their throats. And execute cleanly in the passing game, no more of the drops, bad throws, or protection breakdowns we saw up in SLC. Play that dominant clean game we all know you're capable of and prove to yourselves that you are every bit of the Top 5 team we think you are. For all the magic and "team of destiny" talk we've heard over the last month, set that aside and go be a juggernaut this Saturday night.
